Council catch-up: Schools takeover

The city of Athens, Georgia, is working on a $600-million 10-year capital plan to provide state-of-the-art facilities for its nearly 24,000 students and 3,000 staff. The plan includes installation of artificial turf on all baseball and softball fields and the elimination of all pod gyms. The city council presented a $5.5-million check to the school after closing Tax Increment Financing districts last year.
