Ayla Cardinal, a 25-year-old Canadian woman, has been unable to burp due to a rare condition called retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (RCPD), which prevents her from doing so. She found out about the condition online and a doctor who diagnosed her, who also treated it in person, recommended Botox injections in the cricropharyngeu. The Botox injection loosens the muscle around the throat allowing air to be released. Following the procedure, Cardinal experienced a small burp and soon began burping again. Since the Botox, Cardinal no longer feels bloated after eating or drinking carbonated beverages. She documented her new burping abilities via a viral TikTok platform.
