Nigments announced DLSS 5, a real-time generative AI filter for video games, a new update that combines hand-crafted rendering with AI to achieve greater visual realism while preserving artists' control over artistic expression. Unlike previous versions of upscaling that used machine learning to reduce the gap between high and low graphics settings, this version applies generativeAI to rework lighting and materials with details that feel newly added. Examples from Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, and EA Sports FC have shown significant visual improvements. The AI model is trained end to end to understand complex scene semantics and environmental lighting conditions by analyzing a single frame. DLSS5 can run in real-life at up to 4K resolution and can be compatible with games like Resident EvilRequiem, The Elder Scrolls VI: Oblivion, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, some critics have called it “slop” that alters artistic intent.
