The renegotiation of the Free Trade Agreement (USMCA) between Mexico, the United States, and Canada is under way. The Mexican Importers and Exporters Association (ANIERM) has stated that the USMCA sustains Juárez’s economy and maquiladora industry. If the agreement is not renewed, particularly in the automotive sector, a shift in regional content percentage requirements could force local manufacturing plants to overhaul their supply chains or face tariffs. The majority of the electronics manufacturing industry in Juarez, which is Asian-owned, is also at risk. Concerns have been raised about potential tariffs imposed on electronics manufacturing companies.
