The chief of the Metro Nashville Police Department, John Drake, has pushed for license plate readers as a necessary tool for catching criminals and preventing them from spreading into surrounding cities. Drake and Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell both highlighted decreased crime levels across all police precincts, with violent crime down by 18% and property crime by 20%. Drake also mentioned the need for LPRs to assist in assisting with murders and crime investigations. Critics of LPR technology worry about how the data could be used, but Drake defended the technology, stating it does not affect anyone outside of Nashville unless they are in a stolen vehicle or a missing person. Immigration enforcement was also discussed, despite concerns about eroding trust with immigrant communities over fear of ICE.
