Swedish fighter jets have been patrolling Iceland in a show of force over the Arctic, following President Trump's increased military spending. The Swedish fighters are specifically targeting Russian long-range bombers from bases on the Kola Peninsula, which is home to Russia's Northern Fleet and also has nuclear missile silos. The JAS 39 Gripen is a fourth-generation light single-engine supersonic multi-role aircraft designed for the harsh environment and can perform air-to-air operations. However, some analysts and politicians have questioned the rationale behind the build-up, arguing that Russia does not currently pose a threat to Greenland.
