Saturday marks the anniversary of the fatal shootout in Young Park in Las Cruces, which killed three people in 2025, marking the city's worst mass casualty event in decades. The incident occurred during an unsanctioned car meet when multiple shooters opened fire on March 21, 2025, killing at least 14 people and injuring three others. The Las Cruce Police Department has established a real-time crime center and surveillance cameras around the city. Two accused shooters have been convicted of murder and two more are awaiting trial. The family of Jason Gomez, who has named the defendants in a wrongful death lawsuit, alleges that the city failed to secure the park and prevent unsafe activities such as unauthorized meetups. The case remains open and the shooters were never identified.
