GOP senators ratchet up pressure on Speaker Johnson to quickly end DHS shutdown

Republicans in the Senate are increasing pressure on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) to quickly approve a Senate-passed bill to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The pressure comes as tens of thousands of federal workers could miss paychecks next month if the House delays further. Senate Majority Leader John Thune believes that the Senate's passage of a budget resolution indicates he has the votes to pass a budget reconciliation package to fund ICE and Border Patrol through 2029. However, concerns have been raised by GOP senators that this plan could leave DHS Secretary of Homeland Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin potentially running out of money to pay essential federal workers.
