New York State's Public Campaign Finance Board has introduced a public matching funds program for statewide candidates, allowing for the use of up to $3.5 million for the primary and another $3.,5 million in the general election. However, Kathy Hochul, the incumbent governor, has chosen not to participate in the program, stating that she will participate in a single mandatory TV debate. Unlike the tougher New York City public matching fund program, the new Albany program offers no spending cap on those who accept matching funds. The Republican candidate for governor, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, registered for matching funds on Dec. 10 and was certified on Dec 17. The Board should approve a 7-0 vote in favor of Blakeman based on his contributions and should not deny him the matching funds he is entitled to.
