The creator of Roomba, Richard Angle, has launched Familiar Machines & Magic, a new company that aims to create a robot that can form an emotional connection with its owner and develop a distinct personality. The company's first robot, Ami, resembles a cross between a bear, a barn owl, and a golden retriever and can move around your home independently. The Familiar is designed to use generative AI to interact with its owners and learn from them, remember patterns, and adapt to their routines to foster long-term engagement. However, while this could appeal to screen-obsessed society, it could also become a barrier to social interaction as screens are. Success of the company will depend on how consumers respond to bringing a robot into their homes and how much it costs.
