A traffic light in Japan only turns green once a year, according to local history or cultural norms. The only area with any traffic lights in Himakajima, the East Port area, is one that takes an unusually long time to change. This year, these lights are used to teach local elementary students how to safely cross roads and raise general road awareness. The light was installed in 1994 and has only turned green a little over thirty times over the years. However, due to the island's small population, there aren't many cars or many roads, as a result, these stoplights are not much heavy lifting. This lack of traffic and a lack of teaching children how to cross roads makes it difficult for them to learn this skill.
