A shift in human evolution's selection pressures may have led to a major turning point in our evolutionary journey, according to a study by cultural evolution researcher Tim Waring of the University of Maine. The study suggests that human culture, technology, medicine, and collaborative problem-solving skills are now shaping human evolution more than environmental pressures and limitations of our bodies. This is because solutions we create can solve biological challenges faster than evolution can, reducing pressure for genetic adaptation. Waring and evolutionary ecologist Zachary Wood suggest that cultural evolution is driving a gradual shift in how human traits are shaped, leading to a transition that could be accelerating. However, some researchers argue that this shift could have deeper consequences if technology continues to shield humans from natural selection.
