In the past decade, the number of hit-and-run deaths in Missouri has nearly doubled from 3.2% to nearly 7% according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). AAA, which analyzed the data, called this trend alarming and alarming. In 2014, only 3% of Missouri's fatal crashes were caused by drivers fleeing the scene. The Association of American States (AAA) also noted that 15% of all police-reported crashes in the U.S. in 2023 involved a driver who fled the scene, rising to nearly 30% in over 30%. Over the full 10-year period from 2014 to 2023, AAA reported 440 people were killed in Missouri hit-And-run crashes. The association urges drivers to slow down at night and reduce distractions behind the wheel, and never leave the scene of a crash - a legal obligation and a moral one.
