The San Francisco Giants failed to complete a sweep against the Padres in a 7-1 defeat at Petco Park, with Matt Chapman and Casey Schmitt causing the first two runs they allowed in the game. Schmitt was charged with an error from Chapman that allowed Jackson Merrill to race home and put the Padres ahead. Adrian Houser, the Giants' No. 5 starter, performed well in his season debut but struggled when San Diego turned its lineup over again. Despite the loss, manager Tony Vitello's team rebounded from an 0-3 opening series and won two of three in San Diego. Despite a nine-run outburst on Tuesday, the team's batting performance was poor, with only four hits and a team OPS of over a team of just 2.3 per game, the lowest in the majors.
