José Contreras Díaz, a 30-year-old South Texas man, was freed by federal officials after being deported earlier in the year. He had been a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which grants protection from deportation and two-year renewable work permits if approved by federal authorities. However, after returning to the United States, he was detained again by immigration agents. His attorney, Stacy Tolchin, argued that deporting him was illegal as his DACA status was still valid at the time of his arrest. Since President Trump took office, at least 261 DACA recipients have been arrested, 75 of them in Texas, and between 86 and 174 have been deported.
