Austin council starts plan to rename Cesar Chavez Street amid sexual abuse allegations

The Austin City Council is planning to rename Cesar Chavez Street after allegations of sexual abuse against the late civil rights activist have surfaced. The decision comes after the Cesar Chayay mural in East Austin was painted over and council members described it as the beginning of a broader process. Councilwoman Vanessa Fuentes and Councilman Zohaib “Zo” Qadri, who represents District 9, said the city needs broad community participation before deciding on a new name. City Manager T.C. Broadnax will gather public input through in-person and virtual meetings, along with surveys, to return options for the renaming. Some residents have suggested renaming the street for labor rights activist Dolores Huerta or for Austin police Officer Jorge Pastore.
