Hungary's next government vows to open communist-era secret police archives

Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition Tisza Party, has pledged to open the communist-era secret police archives in his next government after the recent parliamentary election. Magyars' party defeated veteran leader Viktor Orban's party on April 12 on promises to restore Hungary's pro-European course and release billions of euros in frozen European Union funding. Balint Ruff, who has been confirmed as his nominee to run the prime minister's office, said opening up the archives would be his "number one task". Unlike other countries, Hungary has never publicly disclosed the names of communist-style secret police collaborators.
