Former judges side with Anthropic and raise concerns about Pentagon’s use of supply chain risk label

Nearly 150 retired federal and state judges have signed an amicus brief supporting AI company Anthropic in its lawsuit against the Trump administration for designating it a "supply chain risk". The judges, appointed by both Republicans and Democrats, argue that the Pentagon misinterpreted the statute and violated procedures when it designated Anthropic as a “supply-chain risk.” The label could affect Anthropic's contracts with private-sector firms that do business with the military. The lawsuit comes amid concerns about the potential precedent the situation could set regarding government influence over private companies. The Defense Department designated anthropic a ‘supply chains risk” earlier this month after negotiations over the use of the company’s AI models in classified systems broke down.
