Athena’s nesting season ends after owlet dies, second one is gaining strength

A widely followed owl nest livestream has ended after one of two owlets born had died, marking the end of the 2026 nesting season at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The second, which was initially reported to have died, is gaining strength and being placed in an incubator by the Austin Wildlife Rescue. The decision to shut down the live camera was made after Athena stopped returning to the nest was deemed insufficient. Researchers believe several factors may have contributed to the loss of the first owlet, including decreased food availability and uncertain future of Athena's mate, who typically provides food.
