The Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission is hoping for the Legislature to pass the state's first-ever bill related to a medical cannabis program. The bill, led by State Sen. Rick Holdcroft of Bellevue, would allow the regulatory commission to set fees and raise revenue. Funding set aside in LB 1071’s state budget adjustments, expected to pass next week, would provide funding for tasks such as hiring staff. The commission has been dealing with growing pains and hopes the process will soon be accelerated. The legislation would have initially expanded commission authority to regulate patients, caregivers and medical providers, a move not included in the ballot measure 67% of voters approved in 2024.
