Alyssa Giaquinto, a wildlife rescue and rehab effort in Marlborough, has joined forces with conservationists in Aruba to warn visitors about the impact of off-road vehicle tours on the burrowing owls, a subspecies of burrowing owl found almost exclusively in the island. The animals, which nest in the ground, are particularly vulnerable to utility terrain vehicles, or ATVs, which are often used by tourists exploring the island’s beaches and off-world areas. Many visitors, including those from Massachusetts, are unaware of the damage caused by these tours. GiaQuinto has been working with Aruba-based conservationists to spread awareness and encourage more responsible tourism. The owl's survival is directly impacted by the choices made by visitors, with fewer than 200 breeding pairs left worldwide.
