Tennessee legislature passes bill requiring county sheriffs to enter agreement under 287(g) immigration program

The Tennessee legislature has passed a bill requiring county sheriffs to enter an agreement under the federal 287(g) immigration enforcement program by Jan. 1, 2027. If they do not comply, it could result in the state withholding funds allocated to the agency or local government for use by the agency. The bill allows for temporary suspension of compliance during emergencies, but also allows other law enforcement agencies to enter into these agreements. It also requires immigration-related reporting using law enforcement data to be broken out.
