Richmond, California, has renamed Cesar Chavez Day as a city holiday after allegations of sexual abuse by women and girls against the celebrated labor rights activist were brought to light. The city will now celebrate Farm Workers Movement Day on the same date. Chavez, a prominent figure in California's farmworkers rights movement during the 1960s and 1970s, has been accused of raping and molesting multiple women during the 1970s. Among the accusers is fellow movement leader Dolores Huerta, who said she hid two pregnancies due to the assaults and kept them secret for nearly 60 years. Councilmember Soheila Bana argued that women's contributions have often been overlooked. Other governing bodies are considering removing Chavez's likeness from street names, public buildings, murals, and other memorials across the Bay Area.
