Morocco prevented 6.4% fewer attempts by illegal immigrants to reach Europe in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to the interior ministry. The ministry also dismantled more than 300 migrant‑smuggling networks last year. The decline in interceptions indicates a steady decrease in irregular flows, reflecting a shift in migration routes. The country has been a major departure point for African migrants attempting to reach the Mediterranean or Atlantic routes or by scaling fences surrounding Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Despite years of conflict in Africa's Sahel region, high unemployment, and the impact of climate change on farming communities, Morocco has seen significant decrease in illegal immigration since ending a diplomatic dispute in 2022.
