New AI forecasting could give Texas residents earlier hurricane alerts

The National Hurricane Center has begun using AI to predict hurricane warnings, potentially leading to earlier alerts for Texas residents. The National Institute of Energy and Natural Resources (Phenomena) has found that AI can detect complicated storm interactions earlier than traditional models. This could enable more precise warning areas and fewer unnecessary evacuations. However, challenges remain, particularly in predicting storm size, rainfall and surge.
