The Portal North Bridge, a key part of the Gateway Project, is set to open for passenger service next week. The bridge, which includes 2.5 miles of new track, signaling, and overhead power lines, is expected to significantly improve train travel between New York and New Jersey. N.J. Gov. Mikie Sherrill said the new bridge will eliminate years of signal delays and allow trains to reach 90 mph, 30 mph faster than the current span. The project is also part of a larger effort to double the number of rail lines between the two states and overhaul the century-old Pennsylvania Railroad infrastructure across the Meadowlands. However, another month-long outage is expected in the fall to move New York City-bound traffic onto the new structure.
