Tesla has been one of the few original equipment manufacturers in the US automotive landscape that does not have to adhere to state dealership franchise laws for decades. However, now, competitors EV Rivian and Lucid are receiving the same treatment in at least one state. The traditional dealership model requires consumers to visit showrooms where a third party acts as a middleman in the sale of their vehicle. Washington state recently passed a bill allowing Rivian, Lucid, and any future companies meeting criteria to operate under the same exemption Tesla has operated under since 2014. The bill had bipartisan support and is yet to be signed by Washington Governor Bob Ferguson. This is seen as a serious challenge to Tesla's dominance in the market, but a great sign for Rivian’s ability to compete with dealerships.
