Airlines are finally telling you what caused delays. Why that matters.

American Airlines is providing detailed explanations for flight delays and cancellations through its app, website, and email notifications. The move is seen as a smart move by the airline, which started rolling out enhanced delay and cancellation notifications last month. The airline's COO, Heather Garboden, said it hopes this information will help passengers understand if they are entitled to compensation. The update was initially rolled out on American’s app on March 16 and became available for all flights across the airline on March 30. The most common causes for delays or cancellations include weather, maintenance issues or air traffic control flow programs. William J. McGee, senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, said airlines sometimes try to fudge these explanations, especially if their internal communications about the issues are unclear.
