US Sen. Jon Ossoff is supporting a bill that would require the federal government to obtain explicit approval from local communities before building or opening new immigration detention centers. The Respect for Local Communities Act would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to receive approval from both state and local governments before opening a new ICE detention or processing facility. This comes after a controversy over the recently purchased ICE "mega site" under development in Social Circle, Ga. The bill also requires that the Secretary of Homeland Security notifies relevant committees in U.,S. Congress before moving forward with a new facility plan and a public comment period before construction begins.
