Karla Carranza, a current sergeant with Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD), has expressed her vision for the next sheriff to restore public confidence in public safety and restore community policing to a level of transparency and commitment to community policing. She also highlighted the need for modernization in almost everything, including the replacement of Men’s Central Jail with a modern jail and the creation of a Life Improvement Plan Program to connect inmates to jobs and shelter, alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs when they are released. She stated that the department will train personnel in the Use of Force Policy and de-escalation techniques and have zero tolerance for excessive force or abuse of authority, and will review all use-of-force incidents to ensure compliance with department policies and procedures. Carraneza also outlined plans to train dispatchers for mental health crises or homelessness calls, and ensure deputies have access to appropriate less-lethal tools to protect themselves and the public. She said that while there are currently no current deputy gangs, she would maintain a zero-tolerance stance on deputy gangs and maintain a clear stance against current laws and existing practices.
