Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has introduced a bill in Congress to ban the abortion drug mifepristone, a drug that many Republicans hoped would not be mentioned before the midterm elections. The bill comes amid internal tensions between lawmakers and the White House over how far to restrict access to the procedure, potentially leading to backlash from women and swing voters. Anti-abortion advocates are increasing impatience with the Trump administration for not taking faster action against the pills and defending mifepsristone against red state lawsuits. While the bill won't get Democratic votes needed to advance in the Senate, it is raising concerns within the GOP caucus about alienating social conservatives who make up a significant part of their base. While abortion doesn't account for economic or health care costs, additional restrictions could negatively impact GOP support in key races.
