Cleveland.com has found that city taxes are increasing faster than school taxes, largely due to the inclusion of property taxes in local charters as part of their contracts. This is due to these charters exempt from inflation guardrails, which limit how much typical taxes for schools, fire districts, parks and libraries can rise when home values rise. While school taxes are still the biggest part of the overall bill, they rise as quickly as municipal taxes. This disparity is particularly clear in places where there were no new levies to muddy comparisons. The analysis also revealed that more than half of Cuyahoga County communities saw their tax bills increase by at least 25% in over half of them. Cuyahaoga County Treasurer Brad Cromes attributed long-term increases in local property taxes to legislative decisions aimed at saving the state money.
