Google is in talks with Marvell Technology to develop two new AI chips, a memory processing unit and an inference-optimised TPU, alongside Broadcom and MediaTek in its custom silicon supply chain. The discussions, which have not yet produced a signed contract, come days after Broadcom announced a long-term agreement to design and supply TPUs and networking components through 2031. The move reflects Google's shift towards inference as the dominant compute cost, as the custom ASIC market is projected to grow 45% in 2026 and reach $118 billion by 2033. The new chips would supplement the Ironwood TPU and potentially target different workload profiles or cost points for the growing share of Google’s compute that goes to serving AI models rather than training them.
