Researchers from the University of Michigan have found that approximately 7.3% of American adults have seriously thought about shooting someone, reaching an estimated 19.3 million adults. This is a significant increase from the previous year, and about 8.5 million of these respondents reported having these thoughts within the past year. The study also revealed that 4 million people had considered buying a gun with the specific intent to shoot someone, and another 1. 5 million had brought a firearm to a location with the intent to use it on someone. Men and younger adults were more likely to have these thoughts, and rates were higher among Black respondents in urban areas. However, despite this bleak outlook, one in five people who had these thoughts told someone else about it, which could potentially prevent them from acting on it.
