The American Psychological Association (APA) has stated that it continues to recommend children receive gender affirming medical interventions, despite downplaying its support of child transgenderism in a letter to government officials investigating fraud in pediatric gender medicine. The APA's statement aligns with it's 2024 policy statement, which endorses minors receiving harmful gender medical interventions and condemns state laws banning child sex-changes. However, in a September 2025 letter to the Federal Trade Commission, the APA downplayed its support for "gender affirming care," stating that the primary role of a therapist treating children with gender dysphoria is assessment, not affirmation. Kurt Miceli, the chief medical officer at Do No Harm, said the Association's statements cannot be reconciled. The Association's mission to clarify the distinction between "non-affirmation" and "medical gender‑affirming care" does not mean a predetermined outcome, or bypassing clinical judgment.
