Abramson: Don’t let AI do your taxes

The temptation of AI technology to assist in tax filing is high for millions of Americans, with chatbots promising quick answers and accounting assistance. However, Bruce Abramson, executive director of recruiting and partnerships of Applied Data Science at the New College of Florida, warns that AI is a gamble as it can leak, generate or infer sensitive information about tax returns. Researchers have found that even the best systems in preparation for federal tax returns made only a minority of cases of mistakes, including misusing tax tables, incorrect calculations, and incorrectly deciding if someone qualifies for common credits and deductions. Abramson's advice is to learn to use AI correctly and not to trust it. He suggests that while AI can help you understand taxes, it cannot safely prepare them.
