Maria Gonzalez, a mother of two brothers who died of Duchenne muscular dystrophy 40 years ago, has been campaigning for the cause of her son, Ryu, who is currently fighting for life with the disease. Gonzalez shared her family's story with lawmakers from both parties and patient advocates in Washington, D.C., who urged the Food and Drug Administration to stop blocking drugs like Elevidys, the only gene therapy treatment for Ryu's illness. The advocacy worked, but the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Director Dr. Vinay Prasad resigned a week after announcing his resignation from the FDA. Gonzalez hopes to follow this example of God's example in spreading the good news about health care costs.
