Ziyah Jay Patterson, 31, was convicted of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 42-year-old Angela Marie Lanway. The couple, who were homeless and living behind a business, argued over a gift given to Patterson and then he threw it at him. The attack left Lanway with stab wounds to her ear and neck and she died at a hospital. At trial, Patterson claimed self-defence and claimed that he had no injuries and that Lanway had medical issues.
