Utah Valley University (UVU) has received mixed reactions after announcing Sharon McMahon as the 2026 commencement speaker for the university's largest graduating class in its history. Some critics called the choice "tone deaf" and "disgraceful" as McMahon, a New York Times-bestselling author, award-winning educator and podcaster, has a platform that focuses on political issues both current and historical. However, some students were not particularly pleased with the news of McMahon's return to UVU due to comments she made about assassinated conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was killed on UVU’s campus in September. McMahon has since deleted a thread about Kirk, which she has since removed, but some have reposted it to counter her claims.
