A New Mexico jury has found that social media company Meta harmed children's mental health and safety by hiding what it knew about child sexual exploitation on its social media platforms. The verdict, which signals a shift towards tech companies and the government's willingness to crack down on these issues, comes after a seven-week trial. The jury found that Meta, which owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, prioritized profits over safety and violated parts of the state's Unfair Practices Act. There were thousands of violations each counted separately towards a penalty of $375 million, less than one-fifth of what prosecutors were seeking. A Meta spokesperson stated that the company plans to appeal the verdict and remains confident in its record of protecting teens online.
