Researchers from the Global Burden of Disease Study Breast Cancer Collaborators have identified six lifestyle factors that increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. The study, which looked at cancer trends from 1990 to 2023, found that a diet high in red meat was the highest risk, connected to 11% of cases, and tobacco use, including second-hand smoke, contributed to 8%. The researchers predict a surge in cases of breast cancer, with cases expected to jump from 2.3 million in 2023 to more than 3.5 million in 2050. The researchers also highlighted opportunities for public health policies to make healthier choices more accessible and reduce obesity and high blood sugar.
