Marion Jones was diagnosed with Neuromyelitis Optica, a rare, autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the optic nerves and the spinal cord. Jones, who had been living in Boston working for a green energy company, was partially paralyzed after a flare-up caused her to experience partial paralysis. She was admitted to the Encompass Rehabilitation Hospital of New England, a hospital that specializes in inpatient rehab. Jones underwent intensive therapy and regained her ability to walk and care for herself. She lost her strength in her arms, legs, and was left with severe, rapid, and destructive attacks on the optic nerve and spinal cord, which can lead to permanent vision loss or paralysis. Jones was an avid runner prior to her diagnosis and has since run in six marathons.
