A jury in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties for misleading consumers about the safety of its platforms and endangered children. The decision was made by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, who called it a "watershed moment" for parents concerned about child safety online. This is the first jury verdict of its kind against Meta over harm to young people. The case arose from a 2023 undercover investigation involving decoy accounts posing as users younger than 14 and solicited for sex by several New Mexico men. The company was found liable on both claims brought by the state under its Unfair Practices Act. Despite the size of the penalty, Meta plans to appeal the decision.
