A report by Bernstein has stated that advances in quantum computing could pose a threat to Bitcoin's cryptographic security, but the risk remains manageable and unlikely to cause an existential disruption. The report suggests that building quantum computers capable of compromising Bitcoin remains years away due to technical hurdles and high costs. It estimates that the crypto industry has three to five years to prepare for post-quantum security upgrades, allowing time to transition toward quantum-resistant cryptographic standards. The risk is not uniform across the network, with vulnerabilities primarily concentrated in older Bitcoin wallets and addresses that reuse public keys.
