The US military has long been involved in NASA's human spaceflight program, with the first astronauts on the Artemis II mission set to fly around the Moon since 1972. The mission will be led by Navy test pilots Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover, while the Space Force will track the SLS rocket over the Atlantic Ocean to ensure public safety if it flies off course. The Orion capsule has an abort rocket to rescue it from an exploding launch vehicle. An Air Force rescue team is on standby to retrieve the astronauts if there is an in-flight abort. The Space Force is also developing a roadmap for the next 15 years to address the possibility of military operations in cislunar space, the region of space around the moon.
