Adopt-a-Pet Day organizers aim to find homes for 5k shelter animals

California Adopt-a-Pet Day, June 6, will offer fee-waived adoptions for animals from various animal shelters across the state. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) will provide grants to underwrite fees at most participating organizations. Last year, nearly 150 shelters in California adopted 4,979 pets, with 46% of these animals being the first time they were adopted. The event comes as animal shelters face capacity pressures due to staffing shortages, limited pet-friendly housing, and a lack of affordable veterinary care.
