Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam has revealed that the city's budget deficit has increased to almost $74.5 million for the upcoming school year, up from $70 million previously reported. The increase in deficit is attributed to low enrollment and rising special education tuition costs. The mayor warned that using some of the rainy day fund to close the deficit would put the city at risk of bankruptcy and would require a 26% tax increase for residents. The school and city leaders have recommended that the use of some of their funds would be used to close this deficit. Both leaders have yet to come up with a structural solution.
