Henrico County, Virginia, has used data center revenue to fund a $60 million affordable housing program. The program uses the tax revenue from existing data centers to lower the price of homes and provide assistance to those previously priced out. The fund has awarded money towards the construction of 383 affordable units over the past two years. So far, 30 buyers have received $80,000 in assistance each. This innovative approach could be replicated across the country. If successful, it could be used as a template for how to transform a controversial industry into a community benefit. The initiative is administered by the regional organization Partnership for Housing Affordability.
