Albuquerque's annual Gathering of Nations, which has been running for 43 years, is set to end this month. The last event of the event, "The Last Dance," will be its last, bringing 43 years of North America’s largest powwow to an end. The decision could result in significant loss for local businesses and significant economic and tourist spending in the city. Local artist Clever Garcia, a member of the Ohkay Owingeh and Tesuque Pueblos, expressed his wish to see some of the grant funding from the event go to local Native American-led art galleries and initiatives. The final powwow will take place on April 24-25. The event has been criticized by the Native American community for its commercialization, but organizers deny this.
