URI Professor's Study Uses 'Augmented Reality' To Help Amputees Use Prosthetics

A study conducted by Susan D'Andrea, associate professor of kinesiology at the University of Rhode Island College of Health Sciences, used an augmented reality game to keep participants engaged and motivated during training or rehabilitation. The study recruited 32 healthy, able-bodied participants who wore a bypass body-powered prosthetic device and used the ARm-Strong training game developed at the university. Participants in the augmented reality group were significantly more efficient at using the bypass prosthesis compared to the control group. The next step is to invite individuals with upper-extremity amputations to participate in the study.
